Game Designer
We're looking for a Senior Game Designer to lead the game design of exceptional, innovative, player-centric experiences for the Minecraft Marketplace with our industry-leading team!
You'll join a team of Minecraft enthusiasts working with passion and ambition, to build games that are truly unforgettable.
What you will do
- Gain and maintain expert knowledge and deep understanding of Minecraft's mechanics, culture, and community to understand and empathize with players and player expectations.
- Establish game design benchmarks and quality standards.
- Contribute to the game vision, defining player problems and identifying high impact design opportunities.
- Lead the design and configuration of complex and innovative game mechanics and systems independently.
- Evaluate how mechanics affect and improve the player engagement and experience.
- Collaborate with technical and creative teams and leads to ensure cohesive implementation.
- Solve complex design problems during development.
- Regularly review in-production game builds to ensure fun and engaging gameplay.
- Iterate on design decisions based on playtests, analytics, and player feedback.
- Mentor junior designers and guide their professional development.
Within 1 month, you will…
- Get onboarded to team tools, workflows, and pipelines and familiarise yourself with our team structure, leadership, and stakeholders.
- Work closely with studio leadership and team leads to gain an understanding of Spark's design philosophy and values.
- Participate in playtesting and provide feedback on in-progress work.
- Begin contributing to design documentation and discussions.
Within 3 months, you will…
- Contribute to game vision and design of new Marketplace projects.
- Deliver clear, actionable design documentation for core systems and features.
- Drive iteration through playtesting, feedback, and balancing.
- Pitch original feature ideas that align with player needs and Marketplace product expectations.
Within 6 months, you will…
- Lead game design across all new Marketplace projects.
- Identify opportunities to improve our design pipelines, tools, and review processes.
- Begin refining and building out internal game design documentation.
- Champion player-centric thinking across production and teams.
- Drive design innovation that raises the bar for future projects.
Requirements
- Proven track record of delivering engaging game design across a variety of genres and formats.
- A strong eye for product development and game design, with a solid portfolio of released content, preferably within the Minecraft ecosystem.
- Understanding of Minecraft's core systems, gameplay, mechanics, and creative constraints.
- Skilled in collaborating with cross-functional teams and iterating quickly based on player feedback and testing.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate design decisions and present clearly to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience using technical toolsets and workflows including Git, JSON, and scripting.
- Deep understanding of pacing, player motivation, and retention mechanics.

- Employment is currently available in Germany, the UK, Ireland, Austria, and Canada with the US and Croatia following soon. Rate and benefits will differ based on local currency.
