Environment Lead

We're looking for an Environment Lead to head the creation of environments for our exceptional, innovative, player-centric experiences for the Minecraft Marketplace with our industry-leading team!

You will lead a team of talented environment artists and level designers, and will be part of a studio that works with passion and ambition, to build games that are truly unforgettable.

What you will do

  • Plan, oversee, guide and direct the entire environment creation process.
  • Design, build, and iterate on environments hands-on, translating gameplay and creative direction into compelling spaces that deliver an exceptional player experience.
  • Uphold and advocate for high quality across your teams work.
  • Ensure complex and high-impact challenges are identified early, assigned appropriately, and resolved effectively.
  • Lead hiring, onboarding, and training of new talent for your team.
  • Set clear expectations, give actionable feedback, manage performance, and develop team members.
  • Establish and continually improve the pipelines, workflows, and standards used by your team to increase efficiency and quality.
  • Drive innovation in environment art by researching, experimenting with, and integrating new tools and industry practices.
  • Collaborate with developers to design, implement and maintain internal tools that improve environment and level design workflows.
  • Drive consistency and collaboration across departments and organizational processes.
  • Collaborate closely with other department leads during project execution to ensure environment is cohesive with game direction.

Within 1 month, you will…

  • Get onboarded to team tools, workflows, and pipelines and familiarize yourself with our team structure, leadership, and stakeholders.
  • Meet and build relationships with studio leadership and cross-functional leads to understand their expectations and quality standards.
  • Meet and build relationships with all members of the environment team to understand how to lead and support them.
  • Review existing environment pipelines, tools, and documentation to identify how work currently flows from concept to final implementation.
  • Proactively play content created by the studio to connect with the impact of your work.

Within 3 months, you will…

  • Actively manage the workload and assign tasks to your team members.
  • Enforce quality standards for environment art across active projects.
  • Set clear expectations and provide actionable feedback to team members.
  • Identify early risks, capability gaps, or bottlenecks in the current environment pipeline and propose initial solutions.

Within 6 months, you will…

  • Have implemented measurable improvements to pipelines, workflows, or tools that increase team efficiency and quality.
  • Champion the environment team in cross-functional discussions, driving initiatives that improve collaboration and production quality.
  • Be recognized as the primary owner of environment quality and craft standards, with a track record of resolving complex, high-impact challenges.

Requirements

  • A strong eye for environment design and understanding of visual composition, architecture, shaping, proportions, and color theory.
  • A willingness to adapt to workflows integrated with creative direction and game design, with a proven ability to execute environments based on gameplay and design requirements.
  • A clear understanding of how environments impact the player experience and the importance of good level design.
  • Experience managing, hiring, and mentoring a small team of contributors.
  • Ability to break down complex goals into clear tasks, balance team workloads, track progress, and deliver on time.
  • Extensive experience with building tools such as FAWE, VoxelSniper, or similar.
  • Skill in collaborating with cross-functional teams and iterating quickly based on feedback and testing.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate design decisions and present clearly to both internal and external stakeholders.

What we offer

  • 45.760€ - 56.160€ gross per annum, based on 40 hours per week as an employee.
  • Standard 24 days PTO (plus Bank Holidays).
  • Generous paid sick leave (varies per country).

  • Employment is currently available in Germany, the UK, Ireland, Austria, and Canada with the US and Croatia following soon. Rate and benefits will differ based on local currency.
  • Fixed-term contractor arrangements available outside of employment countries. Not all benefits apply to contractors.
