Development Lead

We’re looking for a full-time Development Lead with Minecraft modding experience to join us for the next chapter of Essential.

You will lead, be part of, and empower a talented and passionate team of six developers, overseeing and contributing to the development of the Essential Mod and projects surrounding it like our public libraries and installer.

From planning and strategy, to day-to-day execution, your leadership and contributions will help deliver new features and improvements that enhance Minecraft for millions worldwide.

What you will do…

  • Hire, develop, and manage developers’ careers, performance, and growth
  • Break down work, balance workloads, track progress, and ensure timely delivery
  • Partner with product, design, QA, and tech leadership to ensure alignment and shared success
  • Drive consistency and collaboration across departments and organizational processes
  • Participate in and contribute to the Essential Mod’s development

Within 1 month, you will…

  • Complete onboarding and gain a clear understanding of our mission, values, and production processes
  • Oversee and guide the entire mod development process
  • Collaborate closely with other department leads during project planning and execution
  • Participate in and run development meetings
  • Become familiar with company policies and best practices
  • Build relationships across relevant departments

Within 3 months, you will…

  • Lead hiring, onboarding, and training of new talent for your team
  • Take ownership of development pipelines, standards, documentation, and tooling
  • Become an expert of the Essential Mod tech stack and codebase
  • Uphold and advocate for high code quality across your team

Within 6 months, you will…

  • Recognize improvements from individual contributors and support their career growth within the company
  • Design, write, test, debug, and document clean and efficient code

Requirements

  • Deep cultural and technical knowledge of the Minecraft Java ecosystem
  • Experience managing, hiring, and mentoring a small team of developers
  • Ability to break down complex goals into clear tasks, balance team workloads, track progress, and deliver on time while unblocking challenges
  • Skilled at working closely with product managers, designers, QA, and technical leadership to ensure aligned goals and smooth execution
  • Capable of aligning team objectives, managing roadmaps, and tracking productivity, quality, and delivery
  • Experience driving collaboration and consistency across multiple teams and departments

What we offer

  • Flexible working hours.
  • Clear career growth and progression opportunities within the company.
  • As a contractor: 30€ to 35€ per hour.
  • As an Employee in Germany: 24.50€ to 28.50€ per hour.
  • Employment is also available in the UK, Austria, Slovenia. Rate will differ based on local circumstances.

  • Applicants must be older than 18 years old.
  • Commitment of 30-40 hours per week.
  • Fully remote.
